When you walk into the small grass huts you will find dozen of bright eyed children excited to begin a new school day. Wearing a clean uniform supplied to them while they attend school and their bellies full with most likely the only meal they will receive that day.
As you walk through the classrooms you will be struck with the enthusiasm they express as they study today’s lesson. As you take your eyes off the children you cant help but notice that a few feet off the childrens head the small trees that have been hewn down with a machete to frame the roof. Beyond that you will see metal that has been rusted so bad that holes are evident. On rainy days school will have to be cancelled as the children will get and the floors will be muddy.
The metal roof is so low that on an average 100 degree day it feels like 120 degrees. Under the childrens feet you will see dirt floors with holes that rodents and insects have burrowed through. The children busy with their lessons attentively watch there teacher “who making the best of a poor situation” write there lessons on handmade chalkboard that has seen better days. The teacher will for one more day write around the holes. You cant help but notice how thick the air is. Then you notice there are no windows to let light or air in.
My friend welcome to Little Africa and
to a normal school day.
It is sad to say but when
poverty is rampant children
become the littlest silent victims.
And Haiti is no different.
Until we educate a generation of children Haiti's future is bleak.
Basic education provides hope for today and will bring opportunity for the future. The ability to read means the opportunity to study and understand the Word of God. The Word of God instilled in a generation of young people is what Haiti desperately needs.
To build six classrooms to the existing church structure. To add a food pantry to store food and supplies to feed the students.
Each classroom will consist of brightly painted concrete walls with windows with block vents to aid in both bringing light
and air to the classrooms.
New tables and chairs for the students to learn at. A new roof that will be painted with light reflecting paint to reflect light away from the classrooms. The school will have a total of 8 rooms all 16x16.
